Frequently asked questions

01 | ABOUT THE MYCELIUM NETWORK

What is the Mycelium Network?

We’re an open-access carbon emissions database. We gather publicly available emissions information and centralise it into a single, machine-readable and openly accessible database of organisations’ carbon emissions.

Why are you doing this?

Our goal is to drive decarbonisation by democratising access to emissions data. As a social enterprise, this mission is legally embedded into our company structure.

Is the Mycelium Network available globally?

Yes, our database includes emissions data from companies worldwide, and we are continually expanding our coverage. If you don’t see data for your region, feel free to suggest companies or sources for inclusion.

How is Mycelium different from CDP?

First of all, hats off to CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) for what they’ve achieved — it truly is impressive. However, we felt there was a need for something slightly different in the market. Here’s the main difference between us and them:

  • We don’t charge companies to disclose their emissions.

  • We only collect carbon emissions data, which significantly speeds up the disclosure process.

  • Our data is fully open-access, whereas CDP restricts IP addresses when users attempt to access more than a handful of disclosures per day.

  • We actively search for emissions data that companies have already disclosed, meaning we can cover more companies than CDP. As a business user, when you sign up, we may have already found your emissions data for you.

  • Finally, we take all of the emissions data we find and use it to benchmark and score companies. This is extremely important, because a carbon footprint doesn't mean much until you understand how it performs compared to peers.

CDP offers a climate score, but we believe there are serious flaws — for example, some large oil and gas companies are scoring a ‘B’ on their A–F system. That doesn’t align with genuine carbon reduction goals.

02 | USING AND CONTRIBUTING DATA

Where does Mycelium source emissions data from?

Our data comes from publicly available sources such as company websites and national directories like Companies House in the UK. When you see the verified tick, it means the data has been provided by the company themselves, adding extra provenance to the data source.

Is it free to disclose emissions data on Mycelium?

Yes, absolutely! There is no charge to sign up and transparently disclose emissions.

Can individuals contribute to the Mycelium Network?

Yes! If you spot emissions data that are not listed or notice incorrect data, you can notify us. Contributions from the community help keep our database robust and accurate. Contact us at crew@mycelium.global to share your findings.

I represent a business. Can I sign up and claim the listing?

Absolutely – this is at the heart of what we do. Our platform is designed to make it easy for businesses to claim their listings. To ensure authenticity, the email domain must match the company’s website URL (e.g., b.gates@microsoft.com cannot claim Apple Inc’s listing).

Does Mycelium verify all the data?

Not all data is verified directly by us. However, when you see the verified tick, it indicates the data was directly provided by the company or confirmed through official channels. Unverified data can still be useful but should be interpreted with caution.

How often is your database updated?

Updates depend on the availability of new public disclosures or company updates, but we aim to refresh listings regularly.

What happens if a company’s data is inaccurate or outdated?

We strive for accuracy, but errors can occur. If you notice discrepancies, please reach out to us. We’ll review and update the information to maintain the integrity of the database.

Do you cover emissions data from all industries?

Yes, we aim to include data from as many industries as possible. From energy and manufacturing to retail and services, our goal is to offer comprehensive coverage to drive cross-sector decarbonisation.

Can I request data for a specific company?

If you’re looking for data that isn’t currently listed, let us know at crew@mycelium.global. While we can’t guarantee immediate results, we’ll do our best to locate and include the data in our database.

03 | SCORING AND TRANSPARENCY

What is the Mycelium Score?

The Mycelium Score is a score out of 10 that reflects the carbon intensity of a company compared to its peers within the same sector. Up to 6.5 points are awarded for carbon intensity, and the remaining 3.5 points are based on the quality of the data provided, taking into account the use of third-party verification and whether the profile is verified.

How is the Mycelium Score calculated?

The score considers factors such as direct and indirect emissions, normalised against revenue. This ensures fair comparisons while highlighting leaders in decarbonisation.

What is the Transparency Score, and why is it important?

The Transparency Score evaluates how openly an organisation discloses its emissions data to Mycelium. It is calculated based on the percentage of emissions categories reported. Not all categories carry equal weight; the weighting reflects emissions averages for the organisation’s industry. For example, in financial services, up to 98% of emissions may fall within the investment category, making it heavily weighted. If a company reports all other categories except investments, it will receive a low score. Conversely, reporting the most crucial and highly emitting categories, including investments, will result in a much higher Transparency Score.

04 | API AND COMMERCIAL USE

Does Mycelium provide an API into the data?

Yes, we do. The API is pro bono for academics and charitable organisations. For commercial applications, there is a subscription fee. Drop us a line at api@mycelium.global for more information.

What if we want to use the data for commercial purposes?

That’s great, we’d be happy to help. We can provide data in CSV format or via our API. Drop us a line at api@mycelium.global for more information.

05 | PARTNERSHIPS AND SUPPORT

I’m a carbon accountant and I want to partner with you – how do I do that?

That’s fantastic – we would love to talk to you! We work with carbon accountants so they can disclose data through the Mycelium Network on behalf of their clients. This provides the best scoring metrics on our platform and highlights your clients’ efforts in the best light. Simply contact us at crew@mycelium.global to begin the process.

How can Mycelium help my organisation meet sustainability goals?

By providing access to peer comparisons and highlighting best practices, we help organisations benchmark their carbon emissions and improve transparency. Sharing your emissions data on Mycelium can also enhance your reputation and attract sustainability-conscious stakeholders. The network helps users identify the best-performing low-carbon companies in any sector, enabling businesses to decarbonise their supply chains.
